Early Review: New Look Poet Voices

The Poet Voices, dominant on the southern gospel scene in the '90s and much of the last decade before disbanding, are back. Group founder, Phil Cross, has brought back his trio with a couple of fresh faces. Take a look at their new take on the old PV song "Grace and Glory."

The video gives us an early view on what this trio could bring us. By comparison, there are some strong Booth Brothers overtones in this particular song. But, given that the Booths are the best group in gospel music, that's not a bad trio to mimic.

Via the video, it would appear that Phil, Donny Henderson and Dan Callahan might end up blending well together. Phil's been in the business a long time, and is smart enough to pair his style with those who will benefit him. Time will tell, though.

You can plainly hear all the studio production features at work correcting pitch issues. I'm not a big of a fan of auto-tune or heavy compression, so I could that as negatives here.

For the video, Phil gets a hat tip for using high quality video. Sharp, clean video will give southern gospel credence in the music world. Overall, I like the video, although I thought the opening "surprise" greetings felt staged, and there were a few minor issues with editing.

In summary, it will take time to see what comes of the latest grouping under the Poet Voices name. One thing we can say -- Phil's got the band back together!
